The Practical Nursing Diploma program at Stenberg College prepares students for entry-level positions as practical nurses in a variety of facilities. Students who enter the practical nursing program typically want to utilize their natural sense of compassion and commitment in a way that enables them to care for others, and provide assistance and basic care for the injured, the sick, the disabled, and a variety of patients. Successful completion of the Practical Nursing Diploma program at Stenberg College prepares students for the Canadian Practical Nursing Registration Examination that enables them to begin their careers in practical nursing.
Students at Stenberg College learn from nursing educators who have nursing experience themselves. This enables educators to share real-life nursing experience with students, giving them a real basis for a practical nursing career that goes beyond classroom learning and even beyond hands-on training. Students learn how to function in a variety of health care facilities, including hospitals, hospice care, home health care, outpatient care, health clinics, rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities.
A typical day in the life of a practical nurse includes administering medication, monitoring patients, documenting assessments and report progress, assisting clients with daily living, advocating for clients, educating patients regarding health-related issues, performing examinations, and assisting in rehabilitation activities. Practical nurses work under the direct supervision of registered nurses or physicians, and assist with routine care of stabilized patients.
