Rasmussen College
Rasmussen College offers potential practical nurses two program options: an associate’s degree in practical nursing, or a diploma program in practical nursing. These Rasmussen College programs are available to students in Minnesota or Florida. Either practical nursing program gives students the background they need to become licensed practical nurses, although the associate’s degree program is more comprehensive and can serve as a stepping stone to further education.
The associate’s degree program in practical nursing includes foundation courses, general education courses, and major and core courses that relate specifically to nursing. An associate’s degree in practical nursing makes it possible for students to go on to pursue a bachelor’s of science in nursing, or BSN. This degree provides students with the skills and knowledge to begin a practical nursing career, including things like nutrition and diet therapy, medical terminology, geriatric nursing, and human anatomy and physiology.
The practical nursing diploma program at Rasmussen College focuses more on the practical nursing core elements, and does not include foundation courses and general education courses. The practical nursing diploma program is a good choice for students who are interested in beginning their careers faster, and who won’t pursue further education.
Students who plan to work toward a BSN or other nursing degrees will benefit from the general background of a practical nursing diploma program, but a diploma program cannot be applied toward the educational requirements for ongoing education. Practical nursing students who intend to undergo further education should pursue the associate’s degree program, which is a longer course but which provides a basis for continuing education.
Rasmussen College also provides a practicum for students in the practical nursing program. Students can choose their practicum sites from a variety of settings, including long-term care, medical clinics, assisted living centers, public schools, and many more.
