The city was founded in 1778 by Adam Stephen, and was home to the first post office in West Virginia which opened in 1792. It was the location of the start of the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, which became a nationwide issue. Martinsburg is home to the famous Apollo Civic Theatre, which was built in 1913, and also the 167thAirlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard.
