Founded in 1872, Bismarck is located on the eastern side of the Missouri River, and became the capital in 1889 when North Dakota was declared a state. The name was chosen in 1873 to honor the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The nearly 100-year old Belle Mehus Auditorium is a local attraction and a regular venue for the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra. For those who enjoy outdoor recreation, the Sertoma Park is three miles long, and follows the Missouri River. The Dakota Zoo is also a common tourist stop.
