Lexington was settled in the 1820s, and quickly became a popular farming community. It was the site of the Battle of Lexington in 1861, and now has a State Historic Site. The Lafayette County Courthouse was built in 1847 and still stands today. The city’s Live! In Lexington series offers affordable season passes to blues, jazz, and off-Broadway shows. Many people visit the town to see the historic architecture of the area, for which it is referred to as the “Athens of the West”.  Many civil war era museums and battlefields are in the area, which draws many war buffs.
